Katihar is famous as the 'Mango City' of Bihar, known for its agricultural produce, especially mangoes. It is also a significant railway junction and a regional commercial hub.

One to two days are generally sufficient to explore Katihar's main attractions and experience its local culture. It is not a major tourist destination.

The best time to visit Katihar is during the cooler, dry months from October to February. The weather is pleasant for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Most local temples and markets in Katihar have free entry. Goga Bil Lake Bird Sanctuary also has free entry. Maharaja Park has a nominal entry fee of rupees 10.

Katihar is generally safe, but solo female travelers should exercise caution, especially after dark. Avoid isolated areas and prefer well-lit, crowded places. Dress modestly.

You must try Litti Chokha, Sattu Paratha, and fresh local mangoes (in season). Also sample Bihari sweets like Thekua and Malpua from local shops.

Auto-rickshaws are the primary mode of transport for getting around Katihar. Cycle-rickshaws are available for shorter distances. Private taxis can be hired for day trips.
